Celebrating 50 years of Title IX

by UAA Office of Equity & Compliance  |

Title IX is 50 years old! What is Title IX, actually?

You’ve probably heard "Title IX" before — maybe in the context of sports in high school or college. But what is Title IX, and why is it important at UAA?

Title IX is a federal law that was passed fifty years ago (Happy Anniversary!) to protect against sex discrimination in federally funded education. Here are some quick myths and facts:

Myth: Title IX only protects girls and women.
Fact: Title IX prohibits discrimination “on the basis of sex,” which is now broadly interpreted to include “sexual orientation and discrimination based on gender identity.” This means everyone.

Myth: Title IX is only for athletics.
Fact: Title IX applies to “any education program or activity,” which includes the classroom, athletics, residence life, and university employees. Again, everyone.

As part of the 50th anniversary of this important legal protection, we’ll be highlighting more info in the coming weeks. Title IX is important for everyone. Know your IX!
