PORTLAND, Ore. (Aug. 10) – Riding a streak of eight straight top-three finishes, hopes are high for the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team again in 2022 as the Seawolves were picked third in the Great NorthwestAthletic Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll, released Wednesday by the league office.

Coming off a 19-12 overall mark and an NCAA Tournament berth, UAA earned 74 points in voting by the league’s head coaches, finishing behind defending champion Western Washington (98) and Central Washington (89). WWU claimed nine of the 10 first-place votes, with UAA getting the other. Simon Fraser (70), Seattle Pacific (61) and Alaska Fairbanks (50) were picked fourth through sixth.

The Seawolves — who tied with Central Washington for second place at 12-6 last season – return five of seven starters, including two-time AVCA Second Team All-America right-side hitter Eve Stephens (3.84 kills per set, .257 attack pct., 2.35 digs per set, 0.79 blocks per set) and all-league setter Ellen Floyd (10.07 assists per set, 0.48 aces per set). Senior libero Talia Leauanae (3.71 dps) brings four years of starting experience, while senior outside hitter Lisa Jaunet (2.47 kps, .185 att%) and sophomore defensive specialist Reilly Plumhoff are also coming off solid campaigns.

UAA premieres with an exhibition match against the Seawolf Alumni on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Alaska Airlines Center. Admission and parking are free.

The regular season kicks off Aug. 19-20 with matches in Honolulu, and the home season begins Aug. 25-27 when UAA hosts the Seawolf Invitational at the Alaska Airlines Center.
