Gratitude for NSS NET Week supporters

by Native Student Services  |

The week before Fall semester began Native Student Services (NSS) welcomed a phenomenal group of over 30 new UAA students into the NET Program during the week-long NET Week orientation. Students living in the residence halls got to move onto campus early and spend the week building community and getting to know each other, campus and staff as well as Alaska Native faculty and Ph.D. students. NET Week included an introduction to UAA technology and academic/study strategies, hearing from 2021-2022 NET Program students, open gym time, personalized Howl Days orientation, a scavenger hunt, and cultural activities hosted by Unguwat Club (an NSS partnership with Alaska Native Heritage Center and APU).

The NET Program will continue for students Fall semester with a weekly course taught by NSS staff and grounded in Native values. The NET Program plays an important role in ensuring incoming Indigenous students find community and a sense of belonging at UAA, which encourages persistence, retention, and ultimately helps students reach their goals for attending UAA.

NET week orientation would not have been possible without support from UAA Campus Services/Seawolf Dining generously providing meals for students during NET Week, including a special welcome dinner that brought together NET students, Alaska Native faculty, NSS staff, and 2021-2022 NET students who are taking on a mentoring role. We are also deeply grateful to the Office of First Year Experience and the Department of Residence Life for supporting the NET Program in a multitude of ways and for the 2021-2022 NET students and NET/NSS mentors who spent time sharing their wisdom with this Fall’s NET cohort.

We want to say chin’an, quyana, and gunalchéesh to all that helped welcome this semester's NET students! We appreciate your commitment to Native Student Services and ANSI goals. It is without a doubt that we could not do it without you all!
