Come share the power of the human-animal bond with students, faculty, staff and guests with Disability Support Services dog Cooper and his trainer Mike, during UAA finals week, December 14 and 15, 10-11 a.m. in the Rasmuson Hall main lobby.

Mike Lewis and his therapy dog Cooper to visit UAA during fall 2022 finals week.

 Mike Lewis and Cooper

With over 10 years of therapy dog visits for Providence Alaska Medical Center’s PAWS  program, Mike is pleased to visit with his latest therapy dog partner Cooper, a two-year-old Biewer terrier. Cooper was born at the height of the pandemic in Virginia. Socialization was a challenge when social distancing was the norm. Nevertheless, he’s grown into a budding therapy dog just in time for Mike’s retirement. Mike and Cooper enjoy sharing "Love On A Leash" and look forward to visiting with you!

Wellness Benefits
The presence of a dog can decrease both physiological and psychological indicators of stress.

  • Most people experience comfort from touching, talking to, and hugging a dog.
  • Just looking at a dog can generate a smile and sense of well-being.
  • Dogs are happy to live in the moment; to simply be.
  • Dogs are great listeners. They can be fully present, and meet us where we are.
  • Sometimes just sharing a smile and a snuggle can make all the difference.
