Cafe Delgga - New Cafe in Lucy Cuddy Hall!

by Keenan Britt  |

Cafe Delgga (translated as raven) is a fully renovated coffee shop that works to honor the first Alaskan lands where UAA stands. Café Delgga will offer UAA campus a west-side location for KBC Coffee and Seawolf Marketplace grab-and-go meals, snacks and hot soups. This coffee shop replaces Daily Grind in the atrium of Lucy Cuddy Hall and opens Aug 28.

With Direction from David Weaver, Executive Director of Campus Services, Seawolf Dining consulted with students and faculty from the Alaska Native Studies at UAA and with the Eklutna Native Village during the conception phase of this renovation. Trenten Hall, Director of Seawolf Dining, says, "Our goal is to honor the Dena'ina people by naming it in their language and designing the space to represent what you see when you look out along the Chugach Range. We also want to give UAA a place to enjoy a great cup of coffee, get a snack and enjoy a space designed for comfort."

We want to thank UAA Professor Donita Slawson for helping us select a Dena'ina name for the new cafe. Her recommendations were suggested to the students and faculty from the UAA Alaska Native Studies program who made the final name selection. We'd also like to thank Eklutna Native Village President Aaron Legget, who also acts as the Senior Curator of Alaska History and Indigenous Cultures for the Anchorage Museum, for meeting with us and supplying much-needed insight and guidance.
