Climate Change Leaders Wanted!

by Green & Gold News  |

Alaska is ground zero for climate change. From permafrost melting releasing methane into the atmosphere, to dramatic erosion of coastlines threatening 30 villages. Climate change affects everything: salmon and other fisheries, wildfires, ocean acidification, infrastructure damage and further impacts we are yet to realize.

The UAA Combat Climate Change Club (C4) will be hosting the second annual Climate Change Conference to discuss and spread awareness in order to gain a deeper understanding of climate change in our lives, as well as what we can do to combat the growing effects of our changing climate.

Presentation Topics

We are looking for presentations (expect a 7-10 minute limit like TED talks). Seeking abstracts from students, faculty, staff and community members on the topics of:

  • Climate change and careers: How is climate change affecting your career or the career you are pursuing? The impacts are far-reaching, from on the ground biological studies to impacts of climate change on mental health.
  • Climate change science: What are current trends in climate research? We seek presentations from all disciplines (environmental science, geology, biology, marine biology, environmental health, agricultural science, or any related topic)
  • Climate change and the arts: How is climate change influencing your art? From sculptures made of plastic waste to paintings and poems of our falling forests, so many of us have expressed our concern and desperation for change through the arts. How have you seen art influence climate change policy or action?
  • Climate and business and economics: How is climate influencing Alaskan businesses and economies? Are the trends different in Alaska than in other states?
  • Climate change outreach, public relations, or sustainability movements: How do you effectively communicate climate change? How do you counter mis/disinformation?
  • Solutions to climate change, for individuals, organizations, and policymakers: Have you been a factor in policy creation or adjustment to limit our impact on the environment? What did it take? How can we create a more sustainable campus?
  • Societal Impacts of Climate: Community equity and the effects of climate change
