First Generation Celebration at UAA

by Green & Gold News  |

Join UAA's TRIO Programs in celebrating First Generation Day on Nov. 8.

First Generation Day is a national celebration initiated in 2017 by the Council on Opportunity and Education and the Center for First Generation Student Success. This day highlights the common experiences shared by students who are a part of the first generation in their family to pursue and complete a bachelor's degree.

Here at UAA we celebrate the thousands of first generation students who developed the skills and intellect to take on the uncharted path of postsecondary education. In addition to students, we recognize the many staff and faculty who have successfully completed their degree as first generation college students.

Ways to celebrate First Generation Day

  1. Staff and Faculty are welcome to come to SMH 116k and pick up their "I'm First Generation" sticker to proudly display their accomplishments (you are a great encouragement to students).
  2. Staff and Faculty can also use the "I'm First Generation" Zoom background image during the week of Nov 7th-10th (it's a great conversation starter). Follow this link to choose your image.
  3. For the entire academic year, TRIO Programs will be showcasing a list of staff and faculty at UAA who are First Generation college students. This is a great opportunity for students to see professionals who might have overcome similar obstacles in their college pursuit. Follow this link to provide your name and title to be included on the First Generation webpage
  4. Finally, all employees and students can look for the first generation student photos placed throughout campus that include personal student messages on why they are proud to be first.
