Through April 2024, Disability Services (DS) offices across the state will continue to offer free monthly virtual training sessions covering a variety of essential DS topics. ASL Interpreters and live transcription services will be provided during each session. All presentations will be recorded for post-session viewing, please register to receive a link.

Navigating Autism: An Introduction to Understanding the Spectrum and Embracing Neurodiversity

Jan. 31, 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Join us for an engaging webinar that delves into the intricacies of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This session will cover a wide range of topics, starting with an overview of ASD, introducing the Alaska Autism Resource Center (AARC) program, exploring key characteristics, understanding sensory processing, and embracing the concept of neurodiversity. Our expert speaker will guide participants through a brief history of autism research, practical strategies, and a holistic view of autism, fostering a supportive and informed community. Join us in unraveling the complexity of autism and celebrating neurodiversity. There will be a Q&A session at the end of the presentation. All are welcome.

Presenter Spotlight

Autumn Holt, M.Ed., program specialist, Alaska Autism Resource Center

Autumn graduated from the University of Central Florida (UCF) with an M.Ed. in Exceptional Student Education. She earned a graduate certificate in autism spectrum disorders from UCF. Autumn is working to earn her Ph.D. at Grand Canyon University. She has sixteen years of teaching experience including teaching at Barrow High School in Utqiagvik. Currently, she is employed as an autism resource specialist at the Alaska Autism Resource Center (AARC). 

Virtual Disability Services Coffee Chats at 8:30 a.m.

The morning after each series presentation, staff and faculty can ‘Zoom’ with DS in an informal virtual gathering centered around coffee, conversation, and constructive solutions. DS Coffee Chats are not recorded.
