Portland, Ore. (Dec. 9) – Alaska Anchorage senior Emilia Long was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Week for women’s basketball Monday, following a pair of sterling performances in home victories over Saint Martin’s and Western Oregon.
A 5-9 point guard, Long averaged 20.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 6.5 steals as the Seawolves won their league openers by a combined 87 points. She shot .539 (14 of 26) from the field, 2 of 4 on three-pointers and 11 of 11 at the foul stripe.
On Thursday, the Port Angeles, Wash., native and Cal Poly Humboldt transfer tallied 15 points and four steals in just 18 minutes of a 78-58 win over previously one-loss SMU. On Saturday, she recorded a collegiate career-high 26 points on 10-of-17 shooting, eight assists, nine steals and no turnovers to help UAA set the record for biggest margin in a GNAC game with a 108-41 blowout of WOU. The nine steals tied the UAA record vs an NCAA D-II opponent and were just one off the record for a GNAC game.
“Millie has continued to get better and better the more she learns our system,” said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy. “She is such a dynamic player on both ends of the floor, and she really showed that this past week. She can change a game with her defensive ability, and with our depth at the guard position, she is able to play a majority of her minutes fresh and aggressive.”
It is the second GNAC weekly honor this season for Long, who leads NCAA Div. II with 5.2 steals per game.
UAA (10-1, 2-0 GNAC) returns to action with games Dec. 19-20 against Hawaii Pacific and Daemen at the Hoops In Hawaii Classic in Honolulu.
