Anchorage (Nov. 30) – Senior center Tori Hollingshead and junior guard Elaina Mack scored 17 points apiece to pace Alaska Anchorage to an 83-44 women’s basketball victory over South Dakota Mines on Saturday night at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (8-1) also got 16 points each from senior guards Emilia Long and Jazzpher Evans as they held the visitors to just 22 points over the final 30 minutes.

The Hardrockers (0-7) were led by 18 points from guard Piper Bauer, but the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference squad could not overcome UAA’s full-court press, committing 28 turnovers and attempting 25 fewer shots than the hosts.

“Our ladies did a terrific job of correcting the defensive errors that we made in the first quarter and getting back into our game plan,” said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy.

After a dominant effort throughout Friday’s 80-41 win over the Hardrockers, the Seawolves hit a first-quarter lull as the visitors took a 22-18 lead late in the opening quarter of the rematch, boosted by 5-of-5 shooting (4-4 3FG) from Bauer.

UAA responded with a 15-0 run to take control, however, and stretched its halftime lead to 42-27.

The Hardrockers stayed within striking distance for much of the third quarter before Mack stretched it to 57-37 on a three-pointer with 1:53 on the clock, and UAA led by at least 20 the rest of the way.

Hollingshead shot 7 of 11 from the field and added four rebounds, three steals and two blocks, while Mack made 3 of 7 from long range.

Long posted game highs of seven rebounds and four steals with just one turnover, and Evans made 2 of 3 three-pointers as she surpassed 1,000 career points at the NCAA Div. II level.

UAA begins Great Northwest Athletic Conference play next week with a Thursday 5:15 p.m. AST tip against Saint Martin’s at the Alaska Airlines Center. Tickets and live links are available at GoSeawolves.com.
