K-12 Outreach
Inspiring Future Engineers
We believe in investing our time and energy into the next generation of engineers. Our mission is to ensure that youth have opportunities to explore STEM concepts at an early age, and to build on their interests, skills, and experience.
Learn About Engineering
We invite you to use our online resources to teach youth about engineering. Guests to our website can use the interactive What Kind of Engineer Are You quiz to determine what disciplines of engineering may be a good fit for them, and can explore each one at greater depth using our Engineering Exploration pages.
Lectures
Our professors have prepared a set of actual lectures from courses they teach to engineering students, and adapted them slightly for middle and high school audiences. These work great as a guest speaker presentations in math and science classes, and can also be conducted remotely using video conferencing.
Summer Engineering Academies
The UAA Summer Engineering Academies are a series of week-long, hands-on instructional sessions for students entering grades 3 through 12 in Anchorage and Mat-Su. Each academy is designed to encourage interest and provide exposure to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
STEM Talks at UAA
This UAA-wide program offers inspiring and engaging presentations by and conversations with UAA's experts in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. These talks are open to the community and are designed to be particularly of interest to high school students.
Group Tours
We are proud of our new engineering facilities and are available to give interactive group tours. Consider bringing students here as a school field trips or other other extracurricular programs. We also welcome groups of educators during in-service, training programs, conferences, etc.
Ask an Engineer
Do you have an inquisitive child who asks tons of questions? Why not direct some of those questions to one of our engineering faculty, students, and alumni? In this video series, community members can submit videos of their questions for engineers, and we prepare video responses and post them online.
Nerds of the North (Robotics Team)
Alaska's one and only high school FRC robotics team is hosted and mentored right here at UAA. This team shares a lab with the UAA Robotics Team, where they design, build, and program robots to take to national competitions. New team members, members in training, and mentors from across AK are always welcome!
STEM Activity Modules
We have prepared a number of STEM activities for you to use as classroom presentations.
Journey into Engineering
Each year, we host a series of events for high school students who are considering a future in engineering, computer science, and geomatics. These events provide students and their parents the opportunity to tour facilities, interact with engineering students and faculty, and participate in hands-on demonstrations.
Engineering Exploration for Middle School Students
Each spring we partner with the Anchorage Public Libraries to provide interactive and engaging workshops for middle school students, each one focusing on a different discipline in the fields of engineering, computer science, or geomatics.
