Biography

Dr. Sharon Chamard is a professor in the Justice Center. She received her Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from Rutgers-Newark in New Jersey. Dr. Chamard is interested in the spatial distribution of crime, and conflict over use of public space. She has conducted research on geographic patterns of sexual assault and youth violence in Anchorage, and currently is focusing on the mobility patterns of chronic public inebriates and the spatial features associated with homeless encampments. Dr. Chamard has written two Problem-Oriented Guides for Police for the U.S. Department of Justice, one on partnering with businesses to address public safety problems, and the other on homeless encampments. She works closely with the Community Action Policing Team of the Anchorage Police Department, providing training on problem-oriented policing and helping evaluate their activities.
