Learning Domains

Cognitive Domain 

The student will: 

  • identify, select and pass instruments accurately during mock surgical procedures.
  • demonstrate skills competencies through hands-on activities and reinforced through exams. 
  • study and comprehend the structures, functions, and interrelationships of the human body systems. 
  • memorize and understand complex medical terms, prefixes, suffixes, and root words related to surgical procedures, instruments, and anatomical structures.
  • understand the step-by-step processes involved in different surgeries while anticipating the needs of the surgeon.
  • develop critical thinking skills to assess situations, anticipate potential complications, and implement appropriate interventions promptly.

Affective Learning Domain 

The student will: 

  • demonstrate empathy by understanding and acknowledging patients' fears and concerns, providing emotional support, and maintaining a comforting presence before, during, and after surgical procedures. 
  • demonstrate principles of professionalism, integrity, and ethical conduct in surgical technology by having respect for patients' autonomy, dignity, and confidentiality, as well as adhere to ethical standards and legal regulations governing healthcare practice. 
  • develop effective communication skills, including active listening, empathy, and clear expression. 
  • demonstrate effective teamwork by communicating openly, sharing responsibilities, supporting colleagues, and contributing to a positive work environment conducive to patient safety and quality care. 

Psychomotor Learning Domain 

The student will: 

  • demonstrate hands-on competency using surgical instruments, equipment, and techniques. 
  • demonstrate the steps of various surgeries, practice simulated procedures under supervision, and gradually advance to assist in live surgeries, where they will apply learned techniques with precision and efficiency. 
  • demonstrate proficiency in handling and manipulating surgical instruments effectively. demonstrate dexterity and coordination by learning the proper grip, manipulation, and use of instruments during surgical procedures, ensuring accurate placement and manipulation under the surgeon's guidance.
  • demonstrate sterile technique through aseptic practices to maintain a sterile field during surgical procedures. demonstrate gowning, gloving, draping etc.
