The School of Allied Health celebrates its summer graduates with a memorable pinning ceremony on July 27, 2023, at the Edward & Cathryn Rasmuson Hall of the University of Alaska Anchorage.
Alumni Serena Nesteby was recognized with Alaska's 2023 40 under 40 award. She's currently an Advancement Officer at Iḷisaġvik College and said UAA's School of Social Work set the foundation for her career. "I’ve always wanted to be in a profession that helps others. I knew during the Introduction to Social Work course that it was the right field for me."
Alaska AHEC staff and directors traveled to Salt Lake City for the 2023 National AHEC Organization Biennial Conference. Olivia Bridges, Southwest AHEC Director, and Vincent P. Villella, Northwest AHEC Director, each received awards for their dedication to their unique and remote AHEC centers and programs.

Historically, ticks haven’t been a problem in Alaska. But factors like climate change and tourism have created a welcoming environment for new species that can transmit illnesses to humans. Micah Hahn with the Institute for Circumpolar Health Studies is tracking them. “Our work over the past six years is to understand the baseline–where we are with the ticks that exist in Alaska.”
