Meet the Academic Coaches

Madison Bratcher

Psychology major, minor in Neuroscience

Why did you want to be an academic coach?
Becoming an academic coach just felt right for me. I've always loved helping people reach their full potential, especially when it comes to understanding tricky subjects and mastering their studies. It's all about that satisfaction of seeing someone light up when they finally grasp something they've been struggling with. I want to bring that same excitement to coaching, helping students find their groove, perfect their study routines, and achieve their academic goals. It's not just about grades—it's about helping people grow and realize their capabilities.

What is your favorite spot to study on campus?
The Consortium Library! Spent every morning there last semester!

Danial Dhillon

Civil Engineering major

Why did you want to be an academic coach?
I’ve always loved helping people with school, whether it be siblings or friends, and being an academic coach lets me take that further than I’ve been able to before. Quite a few people have struggles that ordinary tutors can’t help with, like time management and how to navigate programs like Microsoft Excel and websites like Blackboard, and I know that being an academic coach will ensure that a resource for students to get one-on-one help with these problems will be available.

What is your top study tip?
Study with other people! I’ve always learned more when studying with other people, as both having to rephrase a concept I already know to explain it to someone else and having a concept explained to me in a different manner than the professor help me learn more efficiently than studying by myself.

Julia Szerszenski

Geological Sciences major, minor in Mathematics

Why did you want to be an academic coach?
I wanted to help people adjust to the non-academic side of college. Learning how to organize your time or study effectively is just as difficult as the material in your classes, if not more so.

What is your favorite spot to study on campus?
The Kaladi Brothers in SSB or the atrium in CPISB! I like getting drinks to study, and on a sunny day, the windows in CPISB make the whole place so peaceful.

Why did you want to be an academic coach?
I've always loved helping others. Even if it's something considered as small or insignificant. Being an academic coach really seemed like the perfect opportunity to be involved on campus and aid others in their daily challenges on campus.

What do you love about UAA?
My favorite thing about UAA are the wildlife! I’m not from Alaska so I’m always amazed by the diversity of the wildlife on campus.

Diego Owens-Zavala

Pre-Dental Hygiene major

Why did you want to become an academic coach?
I decided to become an academic coach because I am passionate about helping others and love seeing people reach their goals! When I was an incoming freshman, I wished I had someone to guide me with developing essential skills including time management, understanding my learning style, and avoiding procrastination. Since then, I have improved my skills and I want to share tips and tricks I've learned with others to help them succeed in their own academic paths!

What is your top study tip?
My top study tip is to study somewhere outside your house! I've found while I study at home, I often get sidetracked and spend my time doing chores, cleaning, etc. Finding a quiet place that's dedicated to studying has helped me stay focused and be more productive!
