Faculty proposals are now being accepted for the 2021 Selkregg Community Engagement and Service Learning Award. The application deadline is Friday, March 26, 2021, by 5 p.m.

The Lesser Yellowlegs (Tringa flavipes) has experienced a precipitous population decline since the 1970s. The causes of this decline are complex and interrelated and include the probable threats of habitat alteration, agrochemical application, and climate change, as well as the know threat of unregulated sport and subsistence harvest. Using PinPoint GPS Argos satellite transmitters, I tracked the migratory movements of birds originating from six breeding and post-breeding locations across Alaska and Canada. In this study, I examined the annual spatial and temporal distributions of migratory Lesser Yellowlegs and their probability of occurrence within geographic regions that participate in shorebird harvest. My study provides the crucial information required to develop and implement targeted and effective conservation priorities for the Lesser Yellowlegs.

Open Educational Resources and other zero cost course materials have the potential to dramatically reduce access barriers for our students, but they also have a variety of benefits for the instructors that use and create them. Welcome to Open Education Week 2021 at UAA! Join us Monday, March 1, as we focus on open educational resources and their impact on student success.

In the MARCHing to Justice Series, Native Student Services is highlighting several strong BIPOC women over the course of February and March. We are hoping to highlight not just historical context, but to engage the community in discussions around issues BIPOC people face and how we navigate our systems. Our hope is that these panels will spark further discussion, and lead to more panels and community-based events. We need these discussions right now so critically. Our students are really struggling after almost a full year in COVID. We are hoping that these events will be hopeful, strength-based, and authentic. We want to have difficult conversations, but in productive ways that lead to action items. Please join Superior Court Judge Una Gandbhir, District Court Judge Kari McCrea, District Court Judge Jo-Ann Chung, and moderator Theresa Lyons as they discuss how to hold space in places that may not have been "built" for BIPOC women by discussing their paths to the bench.
