Oct. 16, 2018: UAA hosts day of conversation about alcohol and college life

by Michelle Saport  |

Today, UAA hosts a day of conversation about alcohol and college life. Three panels are scheduled for the day: "You Good, Bro?" at 10 a.m.; "Sober is the New Drunk" at 11:30 a.m. and "Designated: Responsibility and Consumption" at 12:30 p.m. Attend one panel or all three. Scroll down for more details, including the complete schedule.

Today's events expands upon a project Alexandra Ellis, senior majoring in English and minoring in psychology, began for a Spring 2018 social psychology class. Her original project was aimed at developing a day of conversation about alcoholism and addiction awareness in the hope of changing attitudes. During the process, she reached out to the community organization Recover Alaska and interviewed them about their local initiatives to change the stigma surrounding alcoholism. At the end of the semester, they requested a copy of her proposal.

This semester, Recover Alaska has teamed up with UAA's Alcohol and Drug & Wellness Education and UAA's College of Health to expand upon Alexandra's initiative. As a way to celebrate collegiate alcohol awareness month (October), they planned "Keep the Hang, Not the Hangover: A Day of Conversation about Alcohol and College Life" for Tuesday, Oct. 16, in the UAA/APU Consortium Library, Room 307. Alexandra will be speaking on the 11:30 a.m. panel about resources on campus for sober students.

"I never thought my project would inspire this kind of event. Alcohol abuse can be a huge problem in college students life," said Alexandra Ellis. "I'm grateful to have the opportunity to raise of awareness about ways to stop drinking and be successful in school because of it."

Not only is she working to improve alcohol-related issues on campus, but she has also engaged the community, Recover Alaska and the College of Health in the process.
