Update on SA Reorganization Specific to NSS/IRSC

by Green & Gold News  |

Dear UAA Community,

We have received several questions about the reorganization of Student Affairs and the renaming of Native Student Services (NSS) to the Indigenous & Rural Student Center (IRSC). I would like to take this opportunity to provide more clarity on what these changes mean.

Early this fall, we recognized that budget challenges due to reduced funding and rising operational costs made it difficult to maintain current levels of programming and positions across the Division of Student Affairs. This required us to think strategically about how to most effectively maximize resources with fewer staff while ensuring students remain connected and supported. We are committed to continuing the work that supports students, creates peer connections, builds community and enhances all student experiences at UAA.

IRSC will continue providing services to students and remain within the Division of Student Affairs, specifically under the Community & Belonging unit. The IRSC will continue to operate as an independent program and will continue to occupy its current space in Rasmuson Hall. This organizational shift is natural and will be seamless, as NSS/IRSC's mission has always been and will continue to be centered around creating a community space for Alaska Native, Indigenous, and rural students, providing academic, cultural, and social support, helping students navigate their college experience.

Looking ahead, we are committed to a collaborative process, including working with the Chanshtnu Council, to develop the center's programs and services, finding new and creative ways to enhance academic support, cultural activities, a sense of belonging and community engagement. We are dedicated to engaging with stakeholders throughout this process as we approach the transition date of July 1, 2025.

Together, we can navigate this transition and continue to provide high-quality services that foster community and belonging. Thank you for your continued support.

Respectfully,

Deanne Woodard
Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs
