Conversation with Vernon Smith, 2002 Nobel Prize winner in economics, April 10

The College of Business and Public Policy (CBPP) will host Vernon Smith, who won the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 2002 for his groundbreaking work in experimental economics, on April 10.

Vernon developed experimental methods that have transformed the field, particularly in studying alternative market mechanisms. His work has set the standard for laboratory experiments in economics, demonstrating the impact of various auction methods on market outcomes.

This conversation, led by CBPP's Lance Howe, professor of economics, will cover a variety of topics including:

  • Growing up in rural Kansas
  • His academic journey, including his studies at Caltech, the University of Kansas and Harvard University
  • The significance of the Nobel Prize and his contributions to the field of economics
  • His thoughts on today's economy and how experimental economics is shaping our understanding of market behaviors
