Job opportunity: Center for Community Engagement and Learning (CCEL) Associate Director

UAA Faculty Development and Instructional Support is seeking applications for an Associate Director of the Center for Community Engagement & Learning (CCEL), the primary entity responsible for promoting and supporting service ­learning and community ­engagement at UAA and its affiliated community campuses. Established as a Center by the University of Alaska Board of Regents in 2000, CCEL enables the university to effectively carry out its community engagement mission while connecting faculty, courses, and academic programs with community needs. The Center advocates for and supports the use of scholarship and action for the mutual benefit of the University, the State, its communities, and its diverse peoples.

Supervising for Success Training

The University of Alaska Human Resources is pleased to announce the Supervising for Success training series. There are three modules, each scheduled for 1.5 hours. Topics include effective employee management and supervisor responsibilities, overview of pertinent policies and regulations, workplace safety and accommodation, basic compensation, recruitment and retention, conflict resolution, performance management, and professional development. Staff Performance Management Guide and Coaching Conversations Training

If you haven’t already done so, now is a great time to begin the staff performance evaluation process. Performance evaluations are designed to engage supervisors and employees about performance expectations and to provide coaching and support to align with both individual and departmental goals in concert with the University of Alaska (UA) mission.

Creating a more welcoming city through research

Multicultural postdoctoral fellow Amana Mbise and assistant professor in clinical-community psychology Sara Buckingham teamed up with the Welcoming Anchorage initiative to research the integration of immigrant and refugee populations in Anchorage, particularly related to employment.

Announcing UAA Interim Chancellor finalists and Town Halls

UA Interim President Pat Pitney announced two finalists for UAA interim chancellor: Christi Bell, Associate Vice Chancellor and Executive Director Business Enterprise Institute (BEI). Christi leads the university’s economic development programs and is responsible for managing the institute’s personnel and budgets; and Bruce Schultz, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. Bruce leads UAA’s student affairs administrative unit devoted to student and campus services, and manages all aspects of the student experience at UAA. All UAA community members are invited to attend town hall meetings on Thursday, Dec. 3 to meet and engage with Christi (4–5 p.m.) and Bruce (noon–1 p.m.).

Update on Anchorage Emergency Order EO-16

Last Wednesday, Nov. 25, Acting Mayor Quinn-Davidson announced Emergency Order EO-16, which goes into effect tomorrow, Dec. 1, and continues through the end of December. The new emergency order stresses the necessity to limit outings and physical contact with those outside our households but also places specific restrictions on certain businesses and activities, mainly those that occur indoors and cannot accommodate face coverings and strict social distancing.
