- Confidentiality
Personal health information is protected by federal law. The Notice of Privacy Practices is available through the check-in process prior to your appointment.
The University of Alaska has declared itself a "hybrid entity" and that the Student Health and Counseling Center is a healthcare component within that entity.
- Eligibility
Students registered in at least one UAA credit have access to primary health care and mental health services for that semester. The health services fee is included in the mandatory consolidation fee when registered through the Anchorage campus, and covers face-to-face office visits, telehealth visits and some procedures at no cost.
Students taking non-UAA courses, or have registered through another community campus should call the health center at 907-786-4050 for available options.
- Insurance Claims
What health insurance does SHCC accept?
The Student Health and Counseling Center continues to file claims as a courtesy for Blue Cross Blue Shield plans, LewerMark and United Healthcare Student Resources (graduate insurance) on behalf of the student, for services rendered at the health center. Please make your insurance card available upon check-in.
A student may submit a claim to other insurance companies with billing information provided by the Student Health and Counseling Center.
Insurance for International Students
International students can obtain insurance through LewerMark to meet the University of Alaska Anchorage requirements.
Insurance for Graduate, WWAMI and Creighton University Students
UAA sponsors a student health insurance plan for Graduate Students who are Research Assistants or Teaching Assistants on a stipend, or Graduates starting their first year at UAA who are in the WWAMI Program.
When Creighton University students carry United Healthcare Student Resources insurance the health center will courtesy bill for them.
All other students must obtain insurance through an alternate route.
Additional Insurance Options
The Marketplace offers lower health insurance premiums for Alaskans within certain income levels. By creating an account and applying for lower cost premiums, you will be able to compare and purchase a health insurance plan that meet your needs.

Need help signing up? Navigators are available to help you through the process. Call 211 and ask for help signing up for insurance through the Marketplace. They will direct you to a navigator in the community.

Forms
- Consent to Treat Minors for health services
Students who are under 18 years of age and attending school at UAA will need to have a parent or legal guardian complete the Minor Consent to Treat Form to access certain health services at the Student Health and Counseling Center.
Students: please have your parent or legal guardian fill out the Minor Consent to Treat Form and bring it to your appointment, or if using telehealth call us at 907-786-4040 prior to your appointment.
- Controlled Substance Contract
Students who are treated at the Student Health and Counseling Center may need a prescription for a controlled substance. In the event a provider and student agree to this treatment plan the Contract for Use of Controlled Substances needs to be completed.

- Missed Appointment
A $35.00 charge will be assessed to the UAA Student Account for students who do not show up or fail to call and cancel prior to their appointments.
If you have missed an appointment and have reason to appeal the charge please submit the Missed Appointment Form to the health center via the Student Health Portal for review. You can find the form via the portal under the Forms tab.
- Releasing Records
A patient can request medical records to be sent from or to the UAA Student Health and Counseling Center (SHCC) after completing a consent for records release. Please allow a minimum of 24-48 hours to prepare records for completion of requests.

- Is there a cancellation policy?

- Where can I find counseling services on the UAA campus?
There are two departments that provide counseling services at UAA:

- What are the contraceptive options at the SHCC?
The Student Health and Counseling Center has a variety of birth control pills, the Nuva Ring, Depo Provera injection, IUD's, Nexplanon and free condoms.
An annual exam is required to receive contraception at the SHCC; the exception to this is emergency contraception. While new pap guidelines do not require a yearly pap, an annual exam is still required to maintain your prescriptions. If your annual exam is due, you may schedule one at the SHCC or at one of the several area clinics and have the results faxed to us.
- Can I get emergency contraception at the SHCC?
Plan B and Ella are available. This must be taken within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse. Same-day appointments are available.
- What lab work can be done at the SHCC during my visit?
We offer onsite pregnancy testing, urinalysis, strep and influenza screening, in addition to other onsite testing. We also contract with the State of Alaska laboratory, and Quest laboratory services for full laboratory services.
- How long does it take to get my lab results?
Most labs are available within a few days. Any lab work sent to the State of Alaska, i.e. HIV screening or titers, take 2-3 weeks before we receive the results.
- What other kinds of tests can I have done through the SHCC?
We can order x-rays, CT scans, MRI'S, mammograms, and ultrasounds. EKG's are done onsite. Referrals are made to the Anchorage community such as physical therapy or medical specialties for further evaluation.
- Can I get a routine physical at the SHCC?
We offer routine physicals at no cost. There are charges for lab work done with a physical exam.
- How do I get my medical records from the SHCC?
A student can request their medical records to be sent from, or to, the SHCC after completing a consent for records release. Please allow a minimum of 24 hours to prepare records for completion of requests.
