Congratulations to UAA Civil Engineering major, Canyon Lewis, on receiving the 2018 Dr. Alex Hills Engineering and Civic Engagement Award. Canyon, together with Biological Sciences major Claire Lubke, will use the Award to design an autonomous aeroponic garden system. Their research will potentially benefit Alaskan communities by promoting locally grown food to reduce dependence on food being shipped into Alaska.

Professor Matt Cullin and his undergraduate assistant, Keir Johnson, have used a ConocoPhillips Arctic Science and Engineering Endowment Award to create a tool to study the effects of corrosion on pipelines. By replicating the conditions that can lead to a catastrophic oil spill, they hope to prevent such future disasters.

At UAA, he led the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) student chapter, served as UAA homecoming king (which is maybe how he met his wife, who also graduated from UAA) and did a semester exchange to Anchorage's sister city Magadan, Russia.

Olympic Cross-Country Skier Pursuing Degree in Mechanical Engineering

Accomplished cross-country skier, Reese Hanneman, spent his life training for the Olympics - a goal finally achieved with his 14th place showing in the men's 4x10 km relay at the Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Reese will now focus his energies on continuing his mechanical engineering studies.
