The Fire and Emergency Services program emphasizes hands-on experience using advanced technology in fire science, life safety and health care. As a student, you’ll explore a wide variety of topics, including safety and survival, fire behavior and combustion, fire protection systems, and principles of building construction.

The Fire and Emergency Services Technology AAS degree prepares you for a wide range of entry-level careers, such as:

  • Firefighter 
  • EMT or paramedic
  • Emergency services dispatcher 
  • Emergency response coordinator

The degree also provides career advancement and professional development for current firefighters and emergency services professionals. EMT Training courses are offered by the Fire and Emergency Services program for non-degree and degree seeking students.

Message from the Director

Thank you for your interest in the University of Alaska Anchorage Fire and Emergency Services Program. Our mission is to graduate competent and ethical professionals by offering students the opportunity to enhance their skills, learn new skills and gain the ability to function in an exciting and demanding profession. Our program provides entry-level knowledge and skills for students planning a career in emergency services as well as providing for the career advancement and professional development of current firefighters and EMTs. The UAA FES program is an excellent choice for students looking to build a solid foundation in the emergency services field or looking to expand on their current knowledge. Most would describe working in the fire service and emergency medical field as a calling, we look forward to helping you answer that call.
