Seawolves rebound queen heads for graduation

For Sierra Afoa, school and sports have always been intertwined. Her coach/referee father Stan and her mom, Sarah - a two-sport athlete for the Seawolves, with two UAA education degrees - stressed that balance early. On Sunday afternoons, while Sarah graded homework in her classroom at Gladys Wood Elementary, the Afoa kids shot hoops in the school gym. Academics and athletics have been interconnected from the start.

Mental Health Care Among Juvenile and Adult Correctional Populations

A panel of officials from the Alaska Department of Corrections (DOC) and the Alaska Division of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) discussed how Alaska tackles the job of providing mental health care to juvenile and adult correctional populations. Nationally, more than half of prison and jail inmates have mental health problems, and probation/parole departments provide essential mental health services to their clients.

UAA alumna ignites community enthusiasm in Mat-Su

The one-day, one-stop event provided people experiencing homelessness with access to a range of services: health and wellness screenings, legal services, employment assistance, toiletries, and a fresh, hot lunch. In the midst of the crowd walked Staci Manier, a UAA alumna (B.A. Human Services '13, with minors in psychology and history) who became community impact director for United Way of Mat-Su in 2014.
