About the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies

The Department of Interdisciplinary Studies includes faculty from across the College of Arts and Sciences to deliver innovative degree programs. The department offers students an opportunity to combine disciplines, work with faculty across the college, and pursue a unique degree that best reflects their intellectual interests. Students who select the Interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS) programs may develop their own specialized program of study in conjunction with a faculty advisor or select one of the approved multidisciplinary advising tracks.

The approved advising tracks include Civic Leadership, Humanities and Social Sciences, International Studies, Sociology, and Women’s and Gender Studies.

Pursuing a degree from the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies may be particularly useful for students who have already completed a two-year associate degree, transferred from another university, or who have previously completed part of a program at UAA or elsewhere. To receive a baccalaureate degree in Interdisciplinary Studies, the student must meet General University Requirements and General Education Requirements (GERs). Major program requirements are established in the interdisciplinary program plan.

Students wishing to obtain an interdisciplinary baccalaureate degree should consult with an academic advisor to determine which option best suits their needs. Proposed individualized tracks must be approved by a faculty advisor in one of the major fields of study, the Chair of the Interdisciplinary Studies Department, and the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences.
